  • Definition. Encoding is the process of taking information from an external source (textbook, lecture, video) and putting it into your brain.
  • Examples. Reading a chapter, listening to a lecture, watching a YouTube tutorial.
  • Key insight. Essential, but passive.

Why 'recognizing' text isn't the same as learning it

The danger of familiarity

  • Familiarity vs understanding. Recognizing material is not the same as mastering it. True learning requires more than mere exposure; it demands active engagement and deep processing.
  • When you re-read or re-watch, your brain recognizes the material. This creates the illusion of knowing.
  • You feel like you know the material because it looks familiar. But familiarity is not understanding, and it is certainly not memory.
  • It is a temporary signal that fades the moment the book is closed.

Step 2: Retrieval

  • Definition. Retrieval, also known as active recall, is the act of actively pulling information out of your memory.
  • The mechanism. This is where real, durable learning happens. It is the transition from passive absorption to active generation.

  • Every time you force yourself to recall a piece of information, you are sending a biological signal to your brain: "This is important, save it!"

  • The Flashcard. A classic tool for forced recall. Ensure the answer is hidden before you guess.
  • The Teacher. Explaining a topic to a friend (or an empty room).
