Memory isn't a storage bin you passively fill. It is a living web of connections you must actively weave.

  • Active recall. Neural regeneration. True struggle. Result: retrieval.

  2. Storage. Consolidation during sleep. Organizing the cabinet.
  3. Retrieval. Finding the file. Quality depends on step 1.

Encoding Strategies

How information gets in.

Used together, not in isolation

Four encoding moves

  • Elaboration. Ask "Why is this true?" and "How does this connect to what I know?"
  • Dual coding. Combine verbal and visual. Draw it while you say it. Two memory traces.
  • Chunking. Group isolated items into meaningful categories to bypass working memory limits.
  • Concrete examples. Ground abstract theories in personal, tangible stories.

Structural maps, not art

  • Supply & Demand. Don't memorize the definition. Sketch the curve.
  • Timeline of dates. 1775, 1776, 1777, 1781… replace the flat list with chunks: Causes, Battles, Consequences.

Testing is a learning tool, not just an assessment tool.

Two retrieval workhorses

  • Blank Page Review. Close the book. Write what you know. Open the book. Fill the gaps.
  • Flashcards done right. The value is in the struggle BEFORE the flip. Vocalize the answer first.

  1. Choose concept. Something you want to understand.
  2. Teach a novice. No jargon. Simple analogies.
  3. Identify gaps. Locate friction points.
  4. Review & simplify. Return to source.

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it.

  • Forgetting curve. Review interrupts forgetting. Hit t=1 day, t=3 days, t=7 days.
  • Blocking (AAAA BBBB). Inferior. Easy execution, weak transfer.
  • Interleaving (ABC ABC). Forces strategy selection, not just execution.

Replace → adopt

Subject application

  • STEM. Drop reworking solved problems. Adopt Blank Page Retrieval; Feynman for formulas.
  • Humanities. Drop memorizing dates. Adopt elaboration via cause/effect narratives; Dual Coding for maps.
  • Languages. Drop vocab lists. Adopt Anki; interleave grammar rules.
  • Psych/Soc. Drop highlighting definitions. Adopt concrete examples — personalize the theory.
