Use this checklist every time you sit down for a focused study session.
Before You Begin
- I have a specific goal for this session (not just "study biology")
- I know exactly what material I'm covering
- I have all materials I need (notes, textbook, practice problems)
- My phone is silenced and out of sight (ideally in another room)
- Unnecessary browser tabs and apps are closed
- I have water nearby
- My environment is set up for focus (good lighting, comfortable temperature, minimal noise, I'm not in my bedroom or on the couch)
During the Session
- I'm using active techniques (retrieval practice, self-testing, explaining concepts)
- I'm taking notes on what I don't understand
- I'm working in focused blocks with short breaks (e.g., 25 minutes on, 5 minutes off)
- When I get stuck, I mark it and move on rather than spinning
After the Session
- I reviewed what I learned and identified what still needs work
- I updated my to-do list or calendar with next steps
- I noted any questions to ask my teacher or study group
- I put materials away and reset my workspace for next time
